Documentary “Say My Name” at the IMA

The Indianapolis Museum of Art screens Say My Name, an exploration of female emcees around the world, on Thursday, October 1, 2009 in the Toby Theater. The movie starts at 7:00 pm and runs for one night only. Tickets are $9.00 for general public, $5.00 for museum members, and free to Indianapolis kids with a student ID.

Say My Name follows the struggles of female emcees around the globe from the Bronx, where hip-hop was born, to London’s east side, where British ladies take the microphone. In the world of hip-hop and R&B, men dominate, often times with misogynistic lyrics and bombastic voices. In his documentary director Nirit Peled examines women who attempt to gain respect in the world of rap battles through their words and not with their bodies.

This exploration features interviews and musical performances from Remy Ma, Rah Digga, Jean Grae, Erykah Badu, Estelle and newcomers Chocolate Thai, Invincible and Miz Korona. Mothers, sisters, daughters, business women, role models, and artists share their personal stories of balancing professional dreams with the realities of urban life, racism, sexism and motherhood.

Catch Say My Name for one night only on Thursday, October 1, 2009 at the Indianapolis Museum of Art.
