Wishard Health Service is partnering with Channel 13 WTHR of Indianapolis to provide free health screenings, flu shots and other medical advice in October. Mark your calendars now for Saturday, October 17 when Indianapolis health care professionals will be on hand at the Westside Family Health Fair from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. This Indianapolis event is expected to make a big difference in Indianapolis health.
Channel 13 WTHR, Wishard Health Services and the Indiana University School of Medicine Student Interest Group are working together to bring the people of Indianapolis the twelfth annual Westide Family Health Fair. The free Indianapolis health event will be held at the Westside Health Center, 2732 W Michigan Street near Indianapolis downtown. The Indianapolis community will be welcomed by students from Indiana University at this free Indianapolis health fair.
Not only will attendees receive free health screening and flu shots for adults 18 and over, but also everyone has the chance to attend a town hall style meeting. The discussion, led by a panel of Circle City leaders and Indy physicians, will focus on health care and related questions. This is a perfect opportunity to expand your Indianapolis education, and ask all those question the nightly news man hasn’t answered yet about Indianapolis health care.
“This will be the twelfth time the Internal Medicine Student Interest Group and Westside Community Health Center leaders have marshaled the talents and resources of Wishard, the Indianapolis community and the many departments and students from the Indiana University School of Medicine to provide disease screening and fun Indianapolis health education for the entire family,” said Dr. Palmer MacKie, a physician at Westside Health Center.
The free health screenings at the Westside Family Health Fair will include blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol, dental and vision. In addition, fitness classes will be going on throughout the event. And do not forget to get that free flu show while you are there if you are over the age of 18.
A variety of booths will also be open for participants to learn from. Topics will include weight loss and exercise, Hispanic resources, WIC, fire safety, seat belt safety, mental health, information on how to quit smoking and primary care services. There will also be trained staff on hand to field questions on anything from paying for health care to STDs to domestic violence to women’s health to nutrition and more. In order to educate a larger crowd about Indianapolis health, the Westside Family Health Fair will also supply Spanish interpreters and bilingual pamphlets.
But this Indianapolis health event is not all about health education. There will also be plenty of activities and prizes for Indianapolis kids in attendance. Indianapolis kids are welcome at this free health fair where they will learn about bicycle and helmet safety. And if the weather is good, a fire truck will be on hand for anybody to tour through.
“We are hoping the whole community comes out to join us, takes advantage of healthy learning opportunities and becomes better educated on a variety of health related issues,” said Dr. Mackie.
The free Indianapolis health fair is sponsored by the Indiana University School of Medicine, Westside Health Center Advisory Council, Indiana University Medical Group, WTHR Channel 13, and Wishard Health Services. For more information about the Westside Family Health Fair, please call 317.554.4600.
