Next weekend, Indianapolis music fans are in for a special treat. The University of Indianapolis and the American Pianists Association will present André Watts at the Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center on October 25. Watts is a world-renowned pianist who was something of a child prodigy during the 60’s. The Hungary native performed with the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra at age nine and made his first nationally televised appearance at age sixteen, also with the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra. The performance garnered a large amount of media attention, eventually earning him a contract with Columbia Records.
Since his national television performance, the pianist has toured the world, been awarded a Grammy, and performed with the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, the National Symphony Orchestra, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, and the London Philharmonic. Currently, Watts is a professor at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University.
Next Saturday, he’ll make his triumphant return to Indianapolis; he has not performed in the Circle City in over twenty years. Presented by the American Pianists Association, an Indianapolis musical organization, André Watts will fill Ruth Lilly Performance Hall with the masterful sounds of his piano. This will be a solo performance, so audience members can take in every subtle nuance of Mr. Watts’ virtuoso playing.
