Emmerich Manual High School

The Emmerich Manual High School is one of the oldest schools in Indianapolis history, with guiding principles to create well-rounded students. The motto of Emmerich Manual High School is “Education of Mind, Hand and Heart,” an idea that has guided the school since its opening in 1885. During that time boys in the Circle City did not usually complete high school. The Emmerich Manual High School was established to provide technical training in combination with academic studies, to create balanced individuals.

Today, Emmerich Manual High School is still producing balanced students. Indianapolis kids enrolled at Emmerich Manual High School are the product of the same principles, which have integrated with new concepts. The idea of training the Mind stems from an emphasis on  human understanding and independent thinking at Emmerich Manual High School. The goal of the first third of Emmerich Manual High School’s motto is to create life long learners with an appreciation of beauty and a thirst for truth.

The second third of this Indianapolis school’s motto applies to the hands-on experience students receive while enrolled at Emmerich Manual High School. The goal of this idea is to instill an understanding of the dignity of labor and a sense of self-accomplishment that comes with having used one’s hands to create something.

The last third of Emmerich Manual High School’s motto deals with educating Indianapolis kids’ hearts. To have respect, goals, and a positive attitude is a crucial part of becoming a productive member of Indianapolis society at Emmerich Manual High School. Students at this school are asked to define their own social, cultural and spiritual values, which will carry them through the course of their lives.

Most importantly students at Emmerich Manual High School gain real world experience in addition to knowledge and skills. Through part time jobs and internships, students are prepared to take on the real world or to continue their education after high school. The administration at Emmerich Manual High School keeps these goals at the forefront of their minds as they interact with students on a daily basis.
