Lawrence Central High School, on the Northeast side of Indianapolis, strives to see all of its Indianapolis kids succeed in their Indianapolis education. With approximately 2000 students from the Indianapolis metro area each year, Lawrence Central High School is an averaged size school in the Indianapolis Public School System. It serves grades nine through twelve.
For their first year in this Indianapolis high school, ninth graders are organized into a team teaching system. Teachers work together to educate a specific group of students, giving them more freedom to track and discuss the progress of their students. Lawrence Central High School finds this system to be extremely helpful in making the transition from middle school to high school.
All students at Lawrence Central High School are encouraged to participate in extra-curricular activities such as team sports as a Bear in the Fall, Winter and Spring, or other social undertakings such as art or theatre. Regardless of what the Bears choose, students at Lawrence Central High School are taught to be global citizens of the world community. Their thinking extends beyond the boundaries of Indy, the United States and even North America to encompass education about cultures around the globe.
In addition, students at Lawrence Central High School are expected to become knowledgeable, skilled, responsible, compassionate and self-directed. Students at Lawrence Central are given the tools they need to become self-sufficient members of Indianapolis society. Each student has a support system to help them transition through high school to a successful career in the real world or in post-secondary education.
Lawrence Central High School students are guided by a few basic principles. Among these are the ideas of responsibility for self and the importance of life-long learning. In addition, these Indianapolis kids are taught to embrace and celebrate diversity, to participate in their community through service learning, and to be digitally literate. The principles help to form the basic foundation on which education stands at Lawrence Central High School.
