Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre spooks this weekend with Casket Girls, an original vampire ballet, Thursday, October 29 and Friday, October 30. Purchase tickets for $25.00 through the Pike Performing Arts Center box office, note that purchasing tickets online will result in an $8.00 processing fee. This new Halloween tale begins at 8:00 pm, when the dancers will take the stage to scare and thrill.
With original music by Cory Gabel, this dance performance piece is nothing shy of unique. Through music as varied as Mozart to Nine Inch Nails, Gabel reinvents the modern ballet. Self-described as a “modern-gothic-alternative-vampire ballet,” Casket Girls puts a contemporary spin on the classic vampire tale. Not for the faint at heart, this Indiananpolis performing arts group will transform into a pseudo Moulin Rogue complete with dancing vampires and nuns. The Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre brings mystery, romance, murder and blood to the stage with powerful choreography.
As the legend goes, the French colony of New Orleans was becoming a destitute place, filled with rowdy sailors, prostitutes and all sorts of foul play. The French government, in an attempt to improve the city, sent a cadre of young nuns to spread Christian morals. However, upon their arrival, the women were raped and turned into ladies of the night. They returned to France, each with a mysterious coffin. Disturbing stories of the contents of the coffins circulated, causing the French government to ship them back to the New World. Ever since the coffins were returned to the Ursuline Convent, where they were originally sealed, the place has said to be haunted by vampires.
