The Elephant Man by Bernard Pomerance follows Joseph Carey Merrick (1862-1890) in the final years of his life. An extremely intelligent and sensitive person, Merrick was afflicted with a very rare hereditary disorder that earned him the nickname of “The Elephant Man.” Known only by his alias, Merrick scrapes by in the world as a side show attraction in a carnival, giving locals a peek at his monstrously deformed body.
One day a young English doctor offers Merrick a home at the London Hospital in Whitechapel, but sadly the Elephant Man becomes a side show freak once more for Victorian society as they use him to raise money. Though he befriends an actress, her efforts to bring light into his dark and solitary world are hindered by the hypocrisy of the world they live in.
