Edgy Indianapolis theatre, The Theater Within, presents another challenging play, Never the Sinner, running from Friday, October 30 to Saturday, November 14. All shows are Friday and Saturday at 8:00 pm in the Indianapolis cultural district, Fountain Square. Tickets are $12.00 for adults and $10.00 for Indianapolis kids with a student ID and seniors.
Based on the headlines of 1924, Never the Sinner follows the story of two angel faced sinners: Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb. These well-to-do Chicago teens randomly select a fellow child to be murdered as part of an intellectual bet. The prosecution of these two boys became known as “The Trial of the Century” as everyone across the United States had an opinion on the case.
Leopold and Loeb found infamy in the news after brutaly murdering Bobby Franks. Their story was sensationalized in what director Rob Issac calls “a portrait of a time in history as split up and reassembled as a Surrealist painting.” Clarence Darrow, famous from the Scopes Monkey Trial, is on the case fighting against the state’s attorney, Robert Crowe. The story was so widely followed across the nation that newspapers held contests, teenage girls wrote fan letters to the murderers, and the vocal public chanted for their death.
