Conner Prairie Living History Museum is one of the best attractions the Circle City has to offer, and there’s no better time to visit this Indianapolis institution than around the holidays. This November, gear up for one of the most impactful exhibits the museum has ever offered, and jump head-first into an Indianapolis history-filled adventure.
The new exhibit, called Follow the North Star, runs Nov 5-7, 12-14, and 19-21, 2009, from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Reservations are required, so make sure you plan ahead; you won’t want to miss this fascinating glimpse into the tumultuous life of a slave on the Underground Railroad. The Follow the North Star experience took years of careful research and planning, and emerged as a heartfelt, compelling picture of one of the most studied time periods in Indiana and United States history.
Participants will jump into this action-packed adventure feet first, each going back in time and living the life of a runaway slave. The journey begins at an authentic slave auction, with a full cast of convincing characters including an aggressive Southerner, a confused farm wife, a free black family, and more. Through a wide variety of real interactions with the cast and with one another, the learners will experience the fear, uncertainty, dismay, and anger of those who suffered in the name of freedom so many years ago.
This gripping physical and emotional journey takes place outdoors, in almost all weather conditions. A path of harrowing twists and turns leads to difficult decisions, unwelcome surprises, and the constant hidden presence of slave hunters. Due to the reality-based intensity of the activity, participants must be 12 years of age or older. For more information on this powerful educational experience, call 317.776.6006.
Although the Follow the North Star interactive exhibit is for older students only, Conner Prairie Living History Park is a wonderful, informative venue for children of all ages to enjoy and learn from year-round. Visit the official website for more information, and plan to take your Indianapolis kids on a Conner Prairie journey to remember.
