Those wonderful women of Motus Dance Theatre are at it again. They last entertained Indianapolis at the end of August, during the 2009 indyFringe Festival with their original work broken fragile mind, performed at the Earth House Collective. Seeing as how that was nearly three months ago, the Circle City is due for a little masterful movement from Motus.
Motus Dance Theatre has always been known for their groundbreaking performances that leaves their audience mesmerized, this latest piece is no exception. Motus has teamed up with the good people running the 2009 Spirit and Place Festival in what is being called “Random Acts of Improvisation.” While this is the first year such works will be taking place, it is the hope of the festival’s organizers that they can serve the Indy community as artistic improvisational inspirations.
So this Friday evening, when you and yours are heading into downtown Indianapolis to do whatever it is you do, think about starting the evening off with a trip to Mass Ave. Since this weekend marks the Indianapolis Downtown Artists and Dealers Association(IDADA) First Friday gallery tour, you’ll have plenty to do while you wait. And you won’t have to wait long since Motus will start their performance around 5:45 p.m.
Since it is improv it is hard to give you specifics on what is in store, but Motus core-member Heidi K Philips is the choreographer who set the parameters for this improvisational site-specific piece. Heidi has also constructed the costumes the performers will be wearing. While you might be saying to yourself that costumes are usually made and not constructed– when you see them you will understand the careful verb selection.
Philips has said she drew her inspiration for the movement from the Indiana wind which is so powerful this particular time of year. All of this can mean only one thing, Motus Dance Theatre will be putting on one hell of a show this Friday evening. So be sure you make your way down to the Indianapolis cultural district of Mass Ave early on November 6th. The show starts at 5:45 p.m.; Motus Dance Company will start by College Avenue and work their way down towards the center of the city.
Rest assured, this piece will be as moving as the wind in which it has drawn its inspiration from. Would you expect anything less from Motus?
