As part of the Ann Katz Festival of Books, the Arthur M. Glick Jewish Community Center will screen the independent feature film Arranged, Saturday, November 7. The Ann Katz Festival of Books is an annual Indianapolis event designed to excite the Indianapolis community about newly published books and independent films, which offer glimpses into another type of life. Arranged offers audiences a chance to see the story of two women with opposite heritages sharing a common bond.
In the film, Arranged, two first year teachers at a public school in Brooklyn, New York meet and become friends. One comes from an Orthodox Jewish background and the other is Muslim. Despite their vast cultural differences, they discover they have more in common then they could have realized. Both women are entering into arranged marriages.
As their relationship blossoms, they face many obstacles together: family, love, sacrifice and the struggle for equality. Against all odds, two women grow a friendship in a cultural wasteland between their two communities. Mary Glucksman of Filmmaker Magazine praised the movie as, “A lovely little gem of a film, beautifully shot and perfectly cast … I can’t remember the last time I screened a similarly low-budget film that pulled all the pieces together so well.”
Before Arranged, join the Jewish Community Center of Indy for the short film Validation. A lowly parking attendant dispenses true validations to his customers, giving both free parking and free compliments. The Indianapolis art event is sponsored by Fifth Third Band and Heartland: Truly Moving Pictures.
