After bouncing from place to place, this theatre season the popular Cabaret performance group, once known as the American Cabaret Theatre, has finally found a full time home. This Indianapolis troupe plans to move shortly to a new, permanent home at the Columbia Club.
The Columbia Club sees this move from ACT’s temporary home at the Connoisseur Room as the beginning of a fruitful partnership. The Club plans to offer dinner and overnight packages as part of the performance experience options. Of course theatre patrons to the Columbia Club do not have to be members. But the Columbia Club plans on offering incentives to attract new members as a part of the American Cabaret Theatre’s move.
The Cabaret’s Managing Director, Shannon Forsell, has high hopes for the move as well, saying, “This partnership with the Columbia Club will really take us to the next level. The most successful cabarets are housed in a club or hotel because the partnerships are such a win win relationship.”
The Cabaret at the Columbia hit a financial rough patch in 2009. This Indianapolis arts group was forced to leave its long time home at the Athenaeum in January after running out of money. Two thirds of the theatre’s staff were laid off. After paying $100,000 a year to rent the historic Athenaeum, the theatre found that it could rarely fill the 350 seat auditorium. Though it had a wonderful location in the Indianapolis cultural district, Mass Ave, and was housed next door to the popular Rathskeller Restaurant and Bar, the theatre just could not make ends meet.
Rather than shut their doors for good, they moved temporarily to the Connoisseur Room. As they searched the Circle City for a new home, it soon became apparent that the Columbia Club and the goals of the American Cabaret Theatre could become closely aligned. With the mission to elevate the cabaret art form, the space at the Columbia Club seemed a perfect match.
In addition, the Cabaret strives to attract, develop and retain high quality local performance talent in Indianapolis and to provide a unique contribution to Indianapolis art and Indianapolis culture, two ideas engrained in the founding of the Columbia Club.
Let us hope that this Indianapolis theatre finds success in their new venture.
