Black Friday Deals Dominate Indianapolis Shopping

Black Friday may be the dark sheep of celebrations during the Holiday season, but that did not stop Hoosiers from braving the frenzy to get a few deals.  Chilly temperatures could not deter shoppers from hitting the streets Friday morning as some Indianapolis businesses started their door buster deals as early as 3:00 am.

Indianapolis shopping offered some of the best deals of the season this morning, but at what price? The demand for the elusive Zhu-Zhu toy, an electronic stuffed hamster, was so high that Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were called to several Toys “R” Us locations in the Circle City. In Castleton, many shoppers waited hours before the doors even opened at 5:00 am. Police were called to address issues of shoving and pushing in the parking lot as shoppers swarmed in a vague line, cutting in front of each other, not listening or cooperating. The manager of the Castleton Toys “R” Us at Castleton Square Mall, B.J. Chavez explains, “Those [the Zhu-Zhu] are the hottest toys. When they are here, they are gone within ten minutes.”

In Greenwood, police were once again called to the scene of a Toys “R” Us simply for crowd control. Shoppers found themselves packed into the store so tightly that they were almost literally spilling out the front door. The mentality of Indianapolis people who braved the Black Friday morning is a two fold contradiction. After being urged to spend this holiday season in support of the restabilizing economy, Hoosiers feel the need to find the best deals. But as stores cut back their inventory in the sluggish economy, demand increases as do prices. Across the United States, shoppers are searching for the delicate balance between spending and saving.

Many more shoppers will forego crowded stores altogether. Retailers can offer some of their best deals online, including door buster sales. Many more offer free shipping options, causing many Indianapolis people to don a bathrobe as they search out gifts this holiday shopping season.
