‘Tis the season for giving, right? So we here at funcityfinder.com in Indianapolis felt that on top of giving you the best we’ve got when it comes to what’s going on in the Circle City, we will give you a little help in trying to find that perfect gift for the special someone on your list. On December 4, and the next twenty days we will give you twenty ways to show you truly care. In the true spirit of Hoosier pride, we will try to suggest only that which is home-grown or handmade right here in Indiana.
DAY 7- The Village Experience
Not since the late, great Jimi Hendrix has there been an experience quite like this one. Just north of downtown Indianapolis, in Broad Ripple Village, you will find some of the best shopping in Indianapolis for the mind, body and soul. The Village Experience offers more than high fashion, great function and superb value… it offers hope.
Through their dedication to the principal of fair trade,–where artisans earn a sustainable wage for their products– Anne and Kelly Campbell are helping Indy help the developing world. And since Christmas is the season for giving, why not let your gifting be felt twofold, both here at home and in the developing world.
If you have never been to the Village Experience before, this Saturday will serve as the perfect introduction. From 5-9 pm, the sisters Campbell will be hosting a Holiday Block Party which will include beer tastings provided by Upland Brewery, wine tastings provided by Barefoot wine and international inspired appetizers from 5 Star Catering at the Riverwalk.
While all the giveaways are a great reason for going, you will be moved most by what you take away. Each individual product the Village offers has the complete story of where it comes from and how it is helping those who produced it. They offer double-strand pearl necklaces straight from Thailand that are not only beautiful, but the sale of each one helps train and council women trapped in the commercial sex trade.
One of their many styles of scarves is the Indian silk scarf. Buying even one provides the artisan a way to further educate himself or herself, and provides their family a means of sustaining their daily life. The Village has bracelets and earrings from all corners of the earth, and African aprons that would look great on any cook. There are candles, bath products and some great home decor that is all quite du jour.
Although much of the Village Experience’s products are geared towards the fairer sex, they have more than a few items for the man in your life. What better way to cheer on Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts than with a fist or two stuffed into a handcrafted bamboo chips-n-dip bowl from Vietnam. And before you ask…yes they come in blue.
A personal favorite of mine are the handmade paper journals crafted in the foothills of the Himalayas. Seeing as how I am pretty picky when it comes to where my words are written, I can guarantee that they will have the perfect journal for the scribe in your life.
One more note of importance is this: everything I have just described can be purchased for under $50. In fact, they have great gifts starting at just $5. How often is it you can help save the world while saving money?
These are just a few of the products that deck the halls of the Village Experience, they offer something that is sure to stuff every stocking on your holiday list. So, this Saturday get your boyfriend or husband to come down to Broad Ripple for the Village’s Holiday Block Party. While he is sampling some of the complimentary food and drink, you can, not so subtly, hint at what Santa should be bringing you this year.
If you can’t make it this weekend, the girls from the Village Experience are there Tuesday through Saturday 11 am to 7 pm. If you still can’t make it, than check out their website and shop online in their virtual store.
