The Nutcracker is a timeless Christmas tradition for many families, and a dance tradition for nearly every dance company across the country. In Indianapolis alone there were at least five productions of The Nutcracker this year. The Indiana Ballet Company adds to this cannon this weekend with their Indianapolis arts production of The Nutcracker. Experience the magic one more time with the Indiana Ballet Company as they bring this timeless tale to life.
Herr Drosselmeier brings magic and mystery to the Stahlbaum’s Christmas Eve party. With gifts and tricks for everyone, he is the center of the party. When the young Masha falls in love with an ugly old nutcracker doll brought by Drosselmeier, he see true potential in her. Soon his magic and her love transform the nutcracker doll into a life sized hero, equipped to fight of Rat Kings and travel to far away lands.
The Indiana Ballet Company revives Vasily Vainonen’s choreography, the closest surviving version of the original choreography by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov in 1892. Their work established The Nutcracker ballet as a standard for ballet for Kirov/ Maryinski and Bolshoi Ballets. Though United States audiences are largely unfamiliar with the choreography, it is the same that dancing legends Nureyev and Baryshnikov grew up on. In fact, it informed their own versions of The Nutcracker produced in the West.
