FREE Concert at the Indianapolis Artsgarden Downtown

What could be better than the gift of free music? That is exactly what the Indianapolis Convention and Visitors Association are giving to the people of Indianapolis this weekend with their twelve free days of Christmas. On Saturday, December 19, the Indianapolis Artsgarden will host a free concert by the Tommy Wills Orchestra, featuring Christmas jazz, blues and classics. This Indianapolis music event starts at 1:00 pm in the Circle Centre Mall in Indianapolis downtown.

Tommy Wills is known around town as the “Man with a Horn. ” This past August, he celebrated his 85th birthday and over fifty years of playing his tenor saxophone in Indianapolis nightclubs. He has been playing big band since he was eighteen years old. Wills recalls, “I was the oldest member in the band, and we could only paly on weekends because half of my band was still in high school.” In the 1940s, Wills played big band all around the Circle City. “After gigs I would pack my horn and head to Indiana Avenue to sit in.”

In the 1970s Wills played the Rathskeller on a regular basis with Frank Glover in the first alto sax chair. They filled the ballroom and the biergarten with their big band sounds in their hey day. Wills has played many formats including jazz and R&B trio. This Indianapolis artist has found success in his own sphere in Indy. “I use to play off and on at the Hub Bub on West 30th Street with the trio,” Will remembers. “Wes Montgomery was there on Saturday afternoon with me in a jam session.”

Tommy Wills has recorded seven vinyl albums and five CDs. His biggest success came with the 1963 single “Man With A Horn,” which subsequently earn Wills his nickname. It sold a half million 45s worldwide. Catch this legendary old school Indianapolis musician for FREE this weekend in Indianapolis downtown.
