Though you may not recognize the name Jerry Herman, his songs are an unforgettable part of not just American theatre, but also American culture. Footlite Musicals proudly pays tribute to this legend of Broadway in their production of Jerry’s Girls, running January 15 through 24 in Indianapolis theatre. Show times are Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 pm and Sundays at 2:30 pm. Jerry’s Girls is a musical revue of composer/ lyricist Jerry Herman’s greatest Broadway moments. This all female cast will delve briefly into the music of Herman’s Broadway including Hello Dolly!, Mame, Mack and Mabel, Dear World, Milk and Honey and La Cage aux Folles. Performed in Footlite Musicals’ intimate cabaret theatre, this annual cabaret performance offers variety and class. Directed by Kevin D. Smith and starring Indianapolis artists Chelsea Alexander, Gloria Bray, Denise Fort, Susie Harloff, Kelsee Hankins, Paige Scott, Cathy Tolzmann, Dab Weinmann and Jodi Wingler
Jerry Herman is considered one of the most successful composers and lyricist in the Broadway world along side talents like Richard Rogers and Oscar Hammerstein. The brain behind dozens of Broadway musicals, Herman was nominated for five Tony Awards. He won twice for La Cage aux Folles and Hello Dolly! In 2009, Herman received the Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre.
His musicals, including Mame, are among the most performed in the world. In addition, they star some of the most notorious female characters in a musical of all time. He is the only composer and lyricist in history to see three of his musicals run more than 1,500 consecutive performances on Broadway. His fame is so far reaching that two of Herman’s classic songs are featured heavily in the Disney-Pixar film WALL-E.
