Indianapolis Civic Theatre opens Bus Stop this weekend, offering Indianapolis theatre a light comedy on their stage at Marian University. Bus Stop will be presented by this Indianapolis performing arts group from January 22 through February 7, Thursday through Sunday. Tickets for this Indianapolis art event range from $21.00 to $34.00. Come laugh a little with this Indianapolis nonprofit organization as they present William Inge’s zany play about life and love at a bus stop.
Set in Kansas City 1955, Bus Stop begins when a freak early March blizzard stops a cross country bus in its tracks. A weathered enforced layover finds the bus’ four passengers in a tiny middle of nowhere roadside diner from 1:00 am to 5:00 am. A lot can happen in only four hours. Eight characters involve themselves in a tangle of relationships in an exuberant comedy. A young lounge singer finds the joys of domesticity; a bold ranch hand finds a gentle touch; and an alcoholic recaptures his sense of dignity. It seems even the most lonely person can find love in this mad-cap blizzard of a story.
Pulitzer Prize winning playwright William Inge leads his audience through a series of lighthearted scenes, revealing a tenderhearted tale of romance that examines how loneliness manifests the hunger for companionship in us all. Bus Stop premiered on Broadway in 1955. For its year long run, it was nominated for four Tony awards including Best Director (Harold Clurman) and Best Play. In 1956, it was adapted for the silver screen in a motion picture hit starring Marilyn Monroe as the tawdry nightclub singer.
The curtain goes up at this Indianapolis theatre at 7:00 pm on Thursdays, 8:00 pm on Fridays and Saturdays and 2:00 pm on Sundays. There will be an ASL interpreted performance on Saturday, February 6 at 8:00 pm. For additional information about Bus Stop, visit the Indianapolis Civic Theatre’s official website.
