Susurrus Performance Group is an Indianapolis theatre company which creates outside of the box Indianapolis art. Famous throughout the Circle City for its experimental techniques and vision, Susurrus Performance Group offers Indianapolis performing arts something completely different.
Founded by Melli Hoppe, this Indianapolis nonprofit organization has created numerous performance pieces seen in different venues through Indy. With a focus on providing a multidisciplinary art experience to the public, Susurrus Performance Group offers both performances and educational opportunities. As a community of Indianapolis artists, Susurrus Performance Group is committed to exploration and experimentation with the objective to expand the vocabulary of movement and performance for the entire Indianapolis theatre community.
The artists that create work for Susurrus Performance Group see performance as an opportunity to dialogue with each other and with their audiences. They hope to enlarge the awareness of self for every participant, performer or spectator.
With a permanent repertoire of two performance pieces on top of their newly created Indianapolis theatre pieces each year, Susurrus Performance Group is open to interacting with Indianapolis education. They have two pieces which can be performed at any time: Current and River. Current is a 45 minute interactive performance based on the Journals of Lews and Clark, interpreted through modern dance. River is a modern dance performance designed to help young children enter into the idea of how dancers use their bodies to convey meaning and story.
Susurrus Performance Group is continually reinventing itself. In 1997 their performance piece Sacred Spaces was voted top dance performance by the Indianapolis Star. They continue to interface with the Indianapolis community by presenting work at the indyFringe Theatre Festival, the Spirit and Place Festival and in venues across Indianapolis.
Mellie Hoppe is an adjunct professor at Butler University, who teaches movement to Butler University Theatre majors. She has taught at a number of Indianapolis schools including IUPUI, Broad Ripple High School, Shortridge Middle School and the Academy of Indianapolis Ballet Theatre.
