Comedians and movie stars Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong come to the Murat Theatre in Indianapolis downtown this Friday, January 22 at 8:00 pm. They reunion tour “Get It Legal” has been sweeping the United States by storm. This Indianapolis event is all ages. Tickets range from $35.00 to $170.00 for this one night Indianapolis comedy event at the Murat Theatre Centre near Mass Ave.
Cheech and Chong became successful beyond their wildest dreams through the seventies and eighties. The comedy duo is famous for their irreverent satire with a focus on counter-culture. In their duet stand up act nothing is off limits for these two old guys. Over the span of their career together the pair released nine hit comedy albums and eight hilarious hit films. They won a Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album for their work on Los Cochinos, released in 1973. Their second album Big Bambu was the second biggest selling comedy album or all time in 1972, and held onto the title for many years.
Their first film Up In Smoke was the highest grossing comedy of 1978, earning an amazing $100 million. From the beginning they have shared success and fame as co-writers of all their movies. Though Tommy Chong directed the films, Cheech Marin became a superstar actor. They parted ways in the early ’80s making their “Get it Legal” tour a highly anticipated reunion for more than twenty five years.
Cheech Marin is one of the most well known and respected Chicano achievers in the entertainment world. As an actor, director, writer, musician, art collector and humanitarian, Marin has proved himself a superstar in not only the Latino world but around the globe. After his split with Tommy Chong, Cheech Marin went on to pursue a diverse range of projects, appearing in more than twenty films beyond the Cheech and Chong franchise.
His film credits include Spy Kids, Tin Cup, and Once Upon a Time in Mexico. He also found fame on the small screen appearing in the popular CBS drama Nash Bridges and with recurring roles on Lost and Grey’s Anatomy. He is also one of the foremost collectors of Chicano art and supporters of Chicano efforts in the arts and entertainment spheres. His collection of art toured into some of the biggest art museums in the United States in fifteen cities from 2001 to 2007.
Tommy Chong is a legend in American counter culture. Born in Edmonton, Alberta Canada, Chong began is career as a musician in a Canadian R&B band. After his split with Marin, Tommy appeared in several films including Far Out Man and National Lampoon’s Senior Trip. He is known to a whole new generation of young people as Leo from Fox’s That 70s Show and also appeared as a guest star on ABC’s Dharma and Greg and The George Lopez Show.
Tommy Chong recently published a new book titled Chech and Chong: The Unauthorized Autobiography sharing the behind the scenes of the duo’s rise to fame. The book follows his New York Times Best Seller The I Chong: Meditation from the Joint, a chronicle of his arrest and time in prison for shipping paraphernalia across the country. He also recently starred in the documentary A/K/A Tommy Chong, the story of his journey after his arrest.
