Whether you are a man or a woman, it is inevitable that the “change” will affect you at some point in your life. From your mother’s mood swings to the your sister’s hot flashes, menopause is a fact of life. Menopause The Musical® happens to make it a very funny fact of life, transforming this unspoken issue into a reason to celebrate womanhood. This Tuesday, February 2 and Wednesday February 3 see Menopause The Musical® at Clowes Memorial Hall on the campus of Butler University in Indianapolis. Tickets for this Indianapolis event range from $39.50 to $49.50; show times on both evenings are at 8:00 pm.
Four women converge at a department store lingerie sale. It seems they have nothing in common except the black lace bra they all happen to eye. That is until they open up about memory loss, hot flashes, night sweats, not enough sex, too much sex and other symptoms of “The Silent Passage.” In a joyful musical parody, the Soap star, the Business woman, the Housewife and the Earth mother share what it’s like to experience menopause. Through song parodies of every genre from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, these ladies rock out as they share their menopausing woes.
The all female cast sing song parodies like “Puff, My God I’m Draggin” and “Stayin’ Awake, Stayin’ Awake” as they delve into this important, yet largely unaddressed (until now), part of femininity. The show has inspired women all over the United States to take charge of the great change. In and uplifting ninety minute production, everything from chocolate binges to wrinkles are tackled with vigor and verve. Join together in Sisterhood as you learn about this perfectly normal stage of every woman’s life.
Menopause The Musical® premiered in 2001 in Orlando, Florida. Since then it has played in more than 250 American cities and crossed the continents. Its international shows include Australia, Canada, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea and the United Kingdom. Women of all ages and nationalities have found their spirits lifted by this one of a kind show that above all else celebrates being a woman.
The most impressive thing to emerge from the success of Menopause The Musical® is a healthy dialogue that has helped to shed light on issues like aging and women’s health that are universal. Writer and producer Jeanie Linders saw the show’s potential to engage and educate early on. In 2005, she launched the Menopause The Musical Out Loud™: Breaking the Silence of Ovarian Cancer tour, which raised nearly half a million dollars for ovarian cancer research. In 2008 she did it again, with an awareness tour that reached fifty United States cities.
