Elizabeth Guippe Hall’s new show, “A Beautiful Mind,” at the Harrison Art Center opens Friday, February 5. Join this Indianapolis artist for a FREE reception from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. This Indianapolis art event is a one of a kind celebration of life’s fragility.
Through the use of mixed media, Guippe Hall channels a centuries old technique to create spectacular encaustic collages for her new exhibit “A Beautiful Mind.“ In her process, she uses applies molten beeswax and color pigments to a surface joining the layers together with heat from a flame. She uses encaustic as both paint and adhesive to create a three dimensional feel. She uses a variety of mediums including digital photographs, found images, graphite, charcoal, etched lines and imported handmade papers.
Through her process is an incredible intricate and unique one, it pales in comparison to her inspiration. “A Beautiful Mind” pays tribute to her close friend Nic Nihiser, who was hit from behind by a hit and run driver while riding his bicycle home. Nic suffered severe brain trauma in the areas of the brain that control vision and sensory perception. After a long stay in the ICU and a lot of work at a rehabilitation center, Nic can walk with assistance.
His sense of humor prevails in the face of this tragedy. Elizabeth Guippe Hall latest exhibit channels her feelings about the tragedy which Nic faced. She
says, “I decided to create a body of work that expresses my thought about the tenuousness of life, the fragility and strength of the body, and the beauty of the mind.”
