Indianapolis is about to be the gathering point for some of the best school bands in the United States. On March 4-6, the Music for All National Festival will be coming to the Circle City. The Music for All National Festival will be made up of three different Indianapolis festivals: the Bands of America National Concert Band Festival, the National Percussion Festival, and the Middle School National Music Festival.

The event promises to be a big moment for Indianapolis music; Indy is an extremely musical town, and the wealth of Indianapolis performing arts and Indianapolis music venues make the city the perfect place to hold such a festival. Events and concerts at the Music for All National Festival will take place at Hilbert Circle Theater (home of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra), Clowes Memorial Hall (at Butler University, an Indianapolis college), and the Warren Performing Arts Center.

The Music for All National Festival is not a competition like the ISSMA State Finals that Indianapolis hosted at Lucas Oil Stadium earlier this year. Instead, it is an invite only showcase of acclaimed school bands from around the country. All bands sent in an audition tape that was then judged by a panel of experts; the best bands were invited to attend the festival. At the actual event, the marching bands and drum lines perform before an informed ensemble of critics and musicians, and afterward they receive criticism, input, and direction.

Though there are no Indianapolis schools or Indiana schools on the roster of the Music for All National Festival, it should still be an educational event for everyone who attends. 27 groups were invited to this year’s festival, including the Sartartia Middle School Wind Ensemble, the Lafayette High School Wind Ensemble (from Lafayette, Louisiana, not Lafayette, Indiana), and the Dickerson Middle School Percussion Ensemble.
