Saturday, February 27, 2010, the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis squeezes in another Indianapolis Black History Month event with A Celebration of Art. This Indianapolis event is included in the price of admission to the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. From 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, let your Indianapolis kids experience the rich fabric of African American culture.
Wonder at the joyousness of African American music, poetry and visual art. With performances by Indianapolis music artists, the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis offers a wide selection of music: jazz, soul, R&B and more. Hear and read poetry depicting the African American experience in the United States, in a kid friendly light, of course. Then marvel at the vibrant colors and unusual lines in art created by talented African American Indianapolis artists. The entire day is a feature on artists in Indianapolis and how their African American heritage has influenced their creative work.
Your Indianapolis kids can partake of a whole host of activities, offered special during the Children’s Museum’s Black History Month A Celebration of Art. After your little darlings have created some wonderful take home art, head to the Lower Level of the Children’s Museum to take in the latest offering in their Planetarium. “Follow the Drinking Gourd” will make its last few appearances on the Planetarium. The program, which runs through Sunday, February 28, 2009, shares a slave’s flight to freedom. Learn how slaves in the South would use constellations to guide their way North to freedom. “Follow the Drinking Gourd” is only one of many coded spirituals that gave hidden directions to slaves on the run.
If you have yet to share the importance of Black History Month with your Indianapolis kids, the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis offers one last exciting chance to do so. Head to the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis for their Black History Month A Celebration of Art. Indianapolis art was never before so accessible.
After a fun filled day at the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, near Indianapolis downtown, treat your kids to a yummy dinner at any of these great Indianapolis restaurants.
