Poems and Parables by Encore Vocal Arts

Encore Vocal Arts presents Poems and Parables, an evening of music and words that will inspire and enlighten Indianapolis people. This Saturday, February 27 the Meridian Street United Methodist Church will be filled with music and words in a unique concert. This Indianapolis music event begins at 8:00 pm and features the talents of humorist Philip Gulley, Encore Vocal Arts Choir and the talents of many other poets and artists. This is an Indianapolis performing arts event to see!

In Poems and Parables, Encore Vocal Arts presents a unique blend of poetry set to choral music and parables written and performed by Philip Gulley. The music, composed by Bloomington musician Malcolm Dalglish and other talented songwriters, is paired with poetry from Wendell Berry and a host of other poets. Philip Gulley’s dry delivery of his own brand of tongue-in-cheek humor will punctuate each piece with brilliant observations, culminating in an evening that will peer into the heart of the human condition.

Gulley is a well known Indianapolis media personality, who has published several collections of essays. His show, “Porch Talk with Phil Gulley” on the Indiana PBS affiliate WFYI, is a hit among many Hoosiers. As “the voice of small-town American life,” Gulley offers insight into both daily life and the bigger picture, all the while offering a wink and a smile.

Composer is just one of the many hats Malcolm Dalglish wears. He plays the dulcimer, directs choirs and much more. His talent on the hammered dulcimer were featured in the soundtrack for the 2002 film Tuck Everlasting. He works closely with the Ooolite choral group, garnering much inspiration from the poems of Wendell Berry.

Don’t miss an exciting evening of music and more by Encore Vocal Arts this Saturday. Tickets to this Indianapolis art event are $12.00 for Indianapolis people at $8.00 for Indianapolis kids.

After the concert head to Broad Ripple Village or Indianapolis downtown for some grub. Grab dinner or drinks at these great Indianapolis restaurants or Indianapolis bars. Discuss the similarities in style between the poetry of Wendell Berry and the compositions of Malcolm Dalglish. Or choose your favorite story from Philip Gulley and try to retell it.
