The world renowned Martha Graham Dance Company will perform at Purdue University this Saturday, February 27 at 8:00 pm. Martha Graham changed the way the world thought about dance. Now see her legacy live this weekend at one of Indiana’s largest universities. Tickets range from $13.00 to $31.00 depending on age and seat location.
Dancer and choreographer Martha Graham founded her own company in 1926. Today it is the most celebrated and oldest contemporary dance troupe in the United States and throughout the world. In its many years of existence, the Martha Graham Dance Company has traveled to more than fifty countries in North and South America, Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East. The company has been seen on the biggest stages in the world, including the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Carnegie Hall, Paris Opera House and even the base of the Great Pyramids of Egypt.
During her lifetime, Graham choreographed 181 works for her company all based on her modern dance style. Though she is obviously the most well known alumnus of the company, it boast many more famous faces (and feet) in dance including Paul Taylor, Merce Cunningham Twyla Tharp and more. In addition a number of celebrities have taken the stage with this innovative dance company including Kathleen Turner, Liza Minnelli, Mikhail Baryshnikov and more. The company even boasts a American royalty as Betty Bloomer, who danced with the company in 1938, later became known as First Lady Betty Ford.
The Martha Graham Dance Company has received critical acclaim since its inception. The Washington Post called the company “one of the seven wonders of the artistic universe.” The Los Angeles Times critic Martin Bernheimer said of them, “They seem able to do anything, and make it look easy as well as poetic.” Discover for yourself what the critics and the world have hailed as one of the most spectacular and legendary dance companies ever created.
