Shen Yun Performing Arts Downtown

Classical Chinese dance has been refined over five millenniums. Based on traditional Chinese culture, Shen Yen Performing Arts offers a glimpse into an ancient art form. Shen Yun Performing Arts takes the stage at the Murat Centre and Theatre this Tuesday, March 9 and Wednesday, March 10 in Indianapolis downtown. Their dance presentation is a visual feast for the eyes, not to be missed by Indianapolis performing arts lovers.

Shen Yun Performing Arts, formerly known as Divine Performing Arts, was formed in 2006 with the mission to preserve and present ancient Chinese dance styles. Through a collaboration of talented choreographers, designers and dancers, their performances have come to be known throughout the United States and the entire world. The company, which is based in New York, is a nonprofit organization independent of China’s communist regime. In fact, their mission is to revive China cultural heritage, which has been suppressed by the Chinese communist state. They do this by bringing the sublime beauty of traditional Chinese dance to life for audiences around the world.

When it was formed in 2006, Shen Yun Performing Arts was a collaboration between several leading Chinese artists and small performance companies. Since then they have grown to consist of three dance companies, three orchestras and a host of talented composers, choreographers, costumers and painters. Their popularity continues to increase exponentially, performing to 200,000 people in their inaugural year, 500,000 people the year after that and 800,000 people in 2009. They have performed in some of the biggest and most well known houses around the world including the Kennedy Center in Washington DC and Radio City Music Hall in New York.

Their performances are entirely unique for many audiences. Their style of dance has been reworked and refined from the heritage passed down for centuries by common people, members of the imperial court and participants in ancient theatre in China. Based on China’s incredibly rich aesthetic tradition, the dance form lends itself to large scale visuals with bright colors and stunning feats. Dancers complete extensive training that consists of jumps, turns, flips and extremely demanding aerial techniques. In an amazing performance, their combined talents have wowed audiences around the globe.

Take a trip to an ancient world, filled with beauty and wonder, as Shen Yun Performing Arts leads the way through their traditional dance techniques. The journey is unlike any other, yet the stories told belong to us all. Don’t miss your chance to marvel at this one of a kind dance troupe as it stops briefly in the Midwest to share with Indianapolis arts.
