Carmel Symphony Orchestra Presents “An Evening with Sylvia McNair

The Carmel Symphony Orchestra enriches Indianapolis music with programing throughout the year. Saturday, March 13 Carmel Symphony Orchestra presents An Evening with Sylvia McNair at the Zionsville Performing Arts Center. McNair is a Grammy Award winning artist, who will present a fun filled Cabaret style performance. This Indianapolis event is a must see.

This Midwestern woman returns to her roots. A graduate of the Indiana University School of Music, Sylvia McNair got her start as an opera singer. After a long and illustrious career, she made a successful segue into cabaret and jazz. Her talent has been noted by The Wall Street Journal, who named her one of only tow of today’s first-rank, American classical artists who “proved adept at jazz vocals.” The Chicago Tribune called her cabaret show a “stylistic breakthrough.”

As a two time Grammy Award winner, it seems everything Sylvia McNair touches turns to gold. She is ranked among top artists of all time such as Dave Brubeck and Kitty Carlisle Hart by The Breukelein Institute who honored her in 2007 with The Gaudium Award for “extraordinary and distinctive contributions to the arts and public life.” Her humble attitude keeps her on top saying in response to the award, “Now that I’ve seen the list of past recipients, I’m sure there’s been some mistake!”

Sylvia McNair recounts her favorite and most accomplished moments in her career thus far. These include a performance of the Bach B-minor Mass with the Vienna Philharmonic for Pope John Paul II at the Vatican, singing for Hilary Clinton and a recital for the United States Supreme Court by special invitation from Justice Sandra Day O’Connor. McNair has produced more than seventy recording of her repertoire, which varies from Mozart arias to modern day classics.

McNair has crossed the country sharing her cabaret act. She has performed at Sheldon Concert Hall in St. Louis, the Terrace Room at The Plaza in New York and Michael Feinstein’s famed Oak Room of the Algonquin Hotel. Currently she is a member of the voice faculty at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University.
