“Butterflies” Bring Color to Zoo

The fluttering beauties of spring are back at the Indianapolis Zoo. Have you ever wished to see the colorful insects, called butterflies up close and personal? Now is your chance. Starting Saturday, March 20, 2010, the Indianapolis Zoo offers a brand new “Butterflies” exhibit in their White River Gardens and Conservatory. See this incredible exhibit at the Indianapolis Zoo through September 7. These incredible Butterflies will bring beauty to the Circle City all Summer long.

Head to the Indianapolis Zoo in Indianapolis downtown near the Indianapolis Canal Walk and White River State Park to see “Butterflies” flutter right before your face. The Hilbert Conservatory fills with dainty butterflies that encircle patrons as they walk through an enclosed space. Butterfly pupae arrive in the first week of March. As the population increases, the show will contain as many as a thousand butterflies, with more and more hatching every day.

Not only does this Indianapolis Zoo exhibit include species of butterflies that are native to America, but also exotic butterflies from both Africa and Central America. The Conservatory is wall to wall with brightly colored plants and flowers that will satisfy all the butterflies (and a few species of moths as well). While you are there, check out the educational materials on how the lives of these mysterious creatures play out. Learn about the process of transformation, food sources, reproduction and life spans of various species.

Exhibit organizers offer this special tip to make your trip to see these butterflies even better: “Be sure to check out the hanging flower baskets on the mezzanine level – these are favorite haunts of the zebra longwing and Julia varieties.” The “Butterflies” show is free to members of the Indianapolis Zoo and included in the price of regular admission for both adults and Indianapolis kids.

Don’t miss your chance to engage with “Butterflies” at the Indianapolis Zoo during the warm weather months this year. After an afternoon excursion to the Indianapolis Zoo, take advantage of the plethora of Indianapolis restaurants in the downtown area.
