This weekend in Indianapolis music, lots of big events and shows are coming to the Circle City. Indianapolis is finally waking up; the last couple weekends have held slim pickings for music fans, but this weekend it seems like Indianapolis bands and musicians have finally decided to get out into the six Indianapolis cultural districts. There are tons of great shows going on this weekend, both big and small, but there are a couple highlights that you should definitely check out.
Probably the biggest Indianapolis event this weekend is the 20th anniversary of NUVO Newsweekly. The Indianapolis magazine, long a voice for underground Indianapolis art, counter-culture, and news, will be celebrating the start of its third decade in publication at the Talbott Street Nightclub on Friday. The show will go on most of the night and features performances by The Leisure Kings, Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band, a host of DJ’s, and more. Tickets can be bought at the Barley Island Brewery in Broad Ripple Village or at any Indianapolis Scion dealer; this one of a kind celebration of the #1 independent voice in Indianapolis media is sponsored by the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, 92.3 WTTS, My Old Kentucky Blog, A Squared Industries, and more.
Another big party this weekend will be held at the Murat Centre. Girl Talk, the current mashup king of the United States, will be bringing his hectic live show the renowned Indianapolis music venue on Saturday. If you decide to go, you can expect Top 40 hits effortlessly entwined with some bizarre choices, including Neutral Milk Hotel, Boston, Oasis, Pixies, and Weezer. But a Girl Talk show is much less about the music and more about getting down and dirty on the dance floor. DJ Gregg Gillis knows how to handle a crowd, directing the energy of the moment like a master. Whether you’re a fan of mashups or not, you’ll still probably have a night to remember at Girl Talk.
Also, hip hop fans should be sure to check out the Vogue on Monday. The original lineup of Bone Thugs-N-Harmony will be taking the stage with Indy hip hop heroes DJ Indiana Jones, G Fresh, and the new supergroup Tornado Alley, which combines the talents of Rusty Redenbacher (of Mudkids), Alpha Live, and Mr. Kinetik.
