When You Comin’ Back, Red Ryder?, by Mark Medoff is a drama set in a small New Mexican diner. This unfortunate restaurants lost a majority of its normal clientele after a new highway bypass put them out of the way. With a small staff of only two, a cook Stephen a.k.a. Red Ryder and a waitress Angel, the hard edge boss of the diner, Clark, struggles to make ends meet. Their boring routine is only completed when the owner of the gas station across the street, Lyle, stops in to break up the monotony as best he can.

However, with a few customers their solitude is disrupted, perhaps forever. A pair of drug running lovers enter the picture, things at this sleepy diner are forever altered. Teddy is an unbalanced Vietnam War veteran with his hippie girlfriend, Cheryl, and a cache of marijuana in tow. After their getaway car breaks down, the pair seek refuge in the middle of nowhere diner. But as Teddy turns his sardonic humor on the diner staff and other patrons, he reveals a talent for picking at people’s innermost insecurities.

As he exposes their fears and secret desires, things turn from bad to worse. Eventually, he takes advantage of their weakness to take the entire diner hostage. He leave, alone, only after binding and robbing each character of their finances and their dignity. Though each person comes through with little physical harm, they have been forever changed by the brutal experience, in more ways than they care to admit.
