William H. H. Miller, 40th Attorney General of the U.S. and Famous Indianapolis Resident

The 40th Attorney General of the United States was a longtime resident of Indianapolis, and Fort Wayne, also in Indiana, though he was born in New York. A respected member on the list of famous people from Indianapolis, William Henry Harrison Miller served in the office of U.S. Attorney General from 1889 until 1893, under President Benjamin Harrison.

Miller and Harrison had a previous connection as law partners for some fifteen years in a law firm in state capital Indy. Miller was, coincidentally, named after the future U.S. president’s grandfather, William Henry Harrison. During the years that William Miller and Benjamin Harrison worked together, Miller proved an invaluable friend and adviser to Harrison, who naturally took Miller along when he embarked on his journey to political stardom.

William Miller
became known for an incorruptible stance on the political issues that came his way. The Harrison administration underwent no scandal during its four-year term, but President Harrison did not serve a second term, mainly due to an economic depression that hurt the Republican party of the time.

After Harrison’s defeat by Grover Cleveland, William Miller went back to practicing law in Indianapolis, where he died in 1917. His body was interred in the famous and historic Crown Hill Cemetery in the Circle City.
