Easter weekend is upon us. Sunday is one of the holiest days all year for the Christian religion. Many families celebrate with egg hunts, a trip to church and a delicious dinner with a focus on togetherness. Over the past twenty years, many Indianapolis people have implemented a new tradition into their Easter experience. This Easter weekend, Pike Performing Arts Center plays host to Upon This Rock, a passion play that shares the story of Jesus and the origins of Easter in the Christian faith.
Each year a cast and crew of more than 300 volunteers from the Indianapolis community come together to share this important story. This Indianapolis theatre production focuses on remembering the life, death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ in an engaging and theatrical way. Whether amateur actor, professional player, back stage crew or audience member, Upon This Rock unites Hoosiers through a shared belief in honoring this sacred day and the life of Jesus Christ. This Christian Theatre Company is comprised of men, women and children who feel uplifted in each others presence, simply through their shared set of beliefs.
Founded in 1984, Upon This Rock played its first years in small local churches. Once word got out of the inspiring experience, crowds began to flock to the passion play, filling auditoriums to capacity year after year. From 1991 to 1995, Upon This Rock took the stage at Clowes Memorial Hall on the campus of Butler University, filling this large Indianapolis performing arts venue to the hilt with adoring patrons. Since then, Upon This Rock has come to be a Spring time institution for many in the Indianapolis community. Each year, audience comes from across Central Indiana and the Midwest to take part in this important remembrance.
Playwright Sharon L. Hill and her brother Pastor A. Thomas Hill transport audience back to the life and times of Jesus Christ. Using their God given talents, they bring Bible stories to life, creating realistic scenes and an incredibly authentic experience. Watch as Jesus, his disciples, Mary Magdalene, Pontius Pilate and other characters from the Bible take up their roles in this famous story. The whole audience will be united during the Passover scene, when they each share in Holy Communion. This followed by the mournful image of a lifeless Jesus on the cross, and then the intense battle between Christ and Satan.
Upon This Rock has been called “Awesome, “Fantastic,” “Excellent” and “Amazing” by nearly every person in attendance. One impressed patron implored the cast and crew of Upon This Rock saying, “Don’t ever stop presenting this play.” This year, the team behind Upon This Rock has expanded one weekend performance schedule to include a Friday matinee, making a grand total of four performances this Easter weekend.
Plus, special guest artist, Lady Tramaine Hawkins, takes the stage filling the auditorium with her powerful voice. This two time Grammy, Dove and Stellar Award winner has a gift to inspired audiences with her vocal talent. As an NAACP Image Award winner and a Gospel Music Hall of Fame Inductee, Hawkins offers an unparalleled vocal experience. Hear her live in this year’s version of Upon This Rock: A Passion Play.
