Racing fans, southern rock fans, and beard fans alike are all going to be pleased come the Friday before Memorial Day: Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees ZZ Top will be performing at the Miller Lite Carb Day this year. The 500 Festival Carb Day is one of the most lucrative portions of the 500 Festival, a month long Indianapolis festival that leads up to the biggest Indianapolis sports event of the year: the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race. At Carb Day, racers compete at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the honor of driving in the Indianapolis 500 on the coming Sunday. Fans come out to Speedway, Indiana by the thousands to socialize, enjoy the sun, tailgate, and cheer on their favorite racers. It’s a pretty accurate preview of what all the hubbub surrounding the Indianapolis 500 will be like.

But Carb Day is not only about fast cars and fast tans. The Indianapolis event is traditionally a site for seeing top national acts cruise into Indianapolis to play for thousands of Indianapolis music fans. ZZ Top is not the first major music act to play the Carb Day Concert. Past years have seen Three Doors Down, Stone Temple Pilots (who, coincidentally, played at the Big Dance Concert Series last weekend), and Kid Rock whip the already beer dazed and sun burned crowd at Carb Day into a pre-race frenzy. ZZ Top is sure to build on the tradition of rock and roll excess crowning a day of beer, engines, and sun.

ZZ Top has been around since 1969 and still retain their original lineup; they’re one of the longest running bands with the exact same players. They’ve been a near-constant fixture in the rock and roll world; they are the authors of massive hits like “La Grange,” “Cheap Sunglasses,” and “Sharp Dressed Man,” and have somehow survived several decades of musical evolution. To this day, they still retain their boot stompin’ style of blues fused boogie, something sure to bring down the house at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Maybe more than their music, however, ZZ Top’s image is the most recognizable thing about them. The chest length beards, the biker aesthetic: you see ZZ Top walking down the street, you know it’s ZZ Top.

Once again, the 500 Festival Carb Day Concert promises to be a vastly entertaining Indianapolis event and a good precursor to the Indianapolis media frenzy that is the Indy 500. Tickets to see ZZ Top and the cars of Carb Day can be bought from a variety of online retailers, most of them for about $40 (much more than the initial ticket price of $10). If you’re a music fan and even slightly interested in racing, this year’s Carb Day with ZZ Top should be one of your Indianapolis things to do this Memorial Day.
