Indy Parks and Recreation might provide material for the NBC sitcom “Parks and Rec,” but their Indianapolis parks also offer entertainment and activities for the whole family. This weekend both Garfield Park, south of Indianapolis downtown, and Holliday Park, near Broad Ripple, offer an Orchid Show and Friday Family Night respectively. These affordable activities offer families a chance to bond in the great outdoors. Plus these Indianapolis parks are a wonderful oasis from the hustle and bustle of life in the Circle City.
Holliday Park’s Family Friday Nights
All ages are welcome to Holliday Park’s Family Friday Nights. Don’t spend another night lazing about in the den or living room, eyes glazed yet fixed on the television screen, disconnected from the world and your Indianapolis kids. Head to Holiday Park to share an adventure the whole family will benefit from. Family Friday Nights are only $3.00 per person, but advanced registration is required.
Sit around the campfire, and snack on s’mores as you discuss the topic of the evening. S’mores and roasting sticks will be provided by park staff. Families can feel free to bring hot dogs to make a meal out of it! The topic on the docket this Friday, April 16 is “You Are What You Eat.” This interesting and different forum will allow families to connect with each other and fellow attendees on the all important topic of nutrition. Teach your kids about the importance of eating right as you find solidarity in other families facing similar issues. Starting them off on the right path at a young age can be invaluable to setting them up for success later in life.
The festivities get underway at 6 :30 pm, and are expected to last no later than 8:00 pm. Break free from the rundown weekend routine with this fun and highly affordable Indianapolis event. Share and learn with your Indianapolis kids, as you grow closer together in family and in the Indianapolis community.
Garfield Park’s Orchid Show
Garfield Conservatory and Park’s annual Orchid Show is this weekend, Saturday, April 17 and Sunday, April 18. Indianapolis people with green thumbs are expected to turn out in droves to this exciting Midwest event at Garfield Park. Presented by the Central Indiana Orchid Society, the Orchid Show at Garfield Conservatory and Sunken Gardens shares a wide variety of these delicate flowers in full bloom.
Not only can you marvel at the beauty of these dainty blooms, but you can also take some home. That’s right; vendors will be on hand selling the most exotic and delicious orchids in Indiana. Did you know that the Orchidaceae, or the Orchid Family, is the largest family of flowering plants? Its name derives from the Greek word “orkis,” which literally means “testicle,” because the plants’ roots have a similar shape. This cosmopolitan flower occurs in almost ever habitat imaginable from deserts to glaciers, though the great majority are found in the tropics.
Tickets to this Indianapolis event are only $1.00. But be sure to bring extra cash to take home some orchids for your garden. Don’t miss the exciting Orchid Show at Garfield Park this Saturday and Sunday!
After these wonderful and economical Indianapolis events, head to Indianapolis downtown, or the Indianapolis cultural district Broad Ripple Village, for a bite to eat. Check out our Indianapolis restaurant listings for some great ideas on where to go!
