If you’re looking something to do on a warm, sunny Saturday and enjoy outdoor fairs and festivals, you won’t want to miss the 40th annual Broad Ripple Art Fair. The trendy Indianapolis cultural district of Broad Ripple is the perfect place for this eagerly anticipated Indianapolis event, with its artsy vibe, beautiful stretch of the Monon Trail, and plethora of unique shops and Indianapolis restaurants.
This year’s iteration of the Broad Ripple Art Fair is being held Saturday, May 15-Sunday, May 16, 2010. Make plans now to spend a leisurely afternoon browsing the treasures from some of the most talented Hoosier artists, as well as from artists around the country. Many of the goods will be on display at the Indianapolis Art Center, but make sure to wander the picturesque grounds outside as well; the fair spills out into the sidewalks and grass and creates a perfect weekend hustle and bustle in Indy.

The Broad Ripple Art Fair has been delighting citizens of the Circle City since its inception in 1971. What started as a small, hipster affair has now grown into one of the largest annual events in Indianapolis, with more than 225 vendors from throughout the United States and Canada. All proceeds from the fair directly benefit the Indianapolis Art Center’s educational programs, so you can feel good about supporting a great Indianapolis nonprofit organization and having fun at the same time.
The doors open bright and early on Saturday and Sunday, so set your alarm and grab your coffee to go. The fair is an all-day event, making it the perfect opportunity to indulge your inner bohemian goddess and make a day of browsing, exploring, and enjoying.

If you’re having trouble pulling your guy away from his fantasy baseball team long enough to attend the Broad Ripple Art Fair with you, bribe him with the allure of every man’s weekend staple: plenty of icy cold beer and good food. The large food court holds something for everyone.
Get your Cajun fix with a spicy bowl of shrimp jumbalaya from Cobb’s Cajun Cookin, or fuel for your hard day of shopping with a stick-to-your-ribs sandwich from Miss Piggy’s Pork Shop. If you get the munchies later, head for Glodo’s Original Kettle Corn for the best snack in the city. And of course, you’ll need something to wash all those goodies down, and the Broad Ripple Brew Pub will be on hand for all of your Microbrew needs. If you’re more of a wine girl, hit up the beer and wine tent for a wide selection of refreshing red and white vino. For a complete list of food and beverage vendors, check out the Art Fair Website.

Since no early-summer celebration would be complete without some earthy, solid tunes to browse along to, the two-day span is packed with with a great line-up of musicians for the Indianapolis music lovers in attendance. Groove to some bluesy jazz or soft rock courtsey of local musicians, and if you’ve brought your Indianapolis kids along, drop by the WFYI Kids’ Stage for plenty of child-friendly fun.
If you’d like to attend the Broad Ripple Art Fair but find the $12 ticket price a bit steep (that’s if you buy tickets in advance at Marsh Supermarkets), why not sign up to volunteer? More than 400 volunteers are needed to make the weekend a success, and you’ll receive free admission plus a complimentary Art Fair t-shirt. Now, who doesn’t love free stuff?
