Each month Mass Ave lights up with a new production from Theatre on the Square. This sometimes campy but always fun Indianapolis theatre has a reputation for producing light work with a punch, while showcasing the acting talents of local Indianapolis artists. Theatre on the Square offers Indianapolis people None of the Above April 30 through May 22, 2010, a two person show “odd couple” show about the SAT. Tickets to this Indianapolis performing arts event are $25.00 for adults and $20.00 for students, seniors and military personnel. Show times are Friday and Saturday at 8:00 pm and Sunday at 5:00 pm.
None of the Above by Jenny Lyn Bader pairs a spoiled New York teen, Jaime, with a nerdy and impoverished grad student, Clark. Jaime is the epitome of “poor little rich girl,” who attends an Upper East Side school, takes weekend class trips to France and rents the “21” Club for her birthday parties. After her allowance is cut off when she breaks a Ming vase, she begins dealing drugs out of her Fifth Avenue penthouse bedroom to keep her in the lifestyle to which she is accustomed.
On the other hand, Clark is actually poor, very poor. After borrowing money from the mob to help himself through grad school, Clark, who is unable to pay them back, is in a situation he can’t control. Aside from a reputation of tutoring students to receive a perfect 1600 on their SAT, Clark has very little up his sleeve. When he signs a high risk, book length contract with Jaime’s father to tutor her for the impending test in which he doesn’t get paid unless her score is perfect, Clark seems to have finally bitten off more than he can chew.
The pair clash right away as Clark attempts to bring Jaime up to speed on her school work. She employs every trick in the book to wiggle out of her parents wishes for Clark to help her study. But as the play evolves so to do the characters. Playwright Jenny Lyn Bader peels away layer after layer of both Jaime and Clark, revealing that (like most humans) they have more in common then they think. Over the course of six months or so, their relationship begins to change, blossom almost, into a real love.
But is it all a clever rouse on Jaime’s behalf to outwit her tutor? Will Clark’s streak of perfect 1600 in his students end? Will this odd couple be matched up in the end? Find out on stage at Theatre on the Square all month! This community Indianapolis theatre offers modern scripts with a fun twist. Count on TOTS for laughs.
