Tickets to this Indianapolis music event are $20.00 in advance and $25.00 at the door. Celebrate this Hoosier born talent as the Indianapolis Jazz Orchestra performs his most famous songs.

Cole Porter was born in Peru, Indiana in 1891. The son of a wealthy Baptist family, Porter has the advantage of studying music from a very young age. He learned the violin at only six, the piano at eight years old and at ten he wrote his first operetta. His mother, Kate, recognized and fostered her son’s talents, going as far as to change his legal birth year from 1891 to 1893 to make him appear more precocious.

After attending Yale University and spending a year at Harvard Law School, Porter soon transferred to study Arts and Sciences and eventually the School of Music. Over the years, Porter composed some of the most well known ballads and big band hits including “Night and Day,” “I Get a Kick Out of You,” “Well, Did You Evah!” and “I’ve Got You Under My Skin.” He also composed music for successful Broadway musicals such as Kiss Me Kate, Fifty Million Frenchmen and Anything Goes. His music has been sung by the greatest singers of all time including Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby and many contemporary artists. Practically every musical instrument that Porter touched turned to gold. His songs remain a staple of American music even today!

The Indianapolis Jazz Orchestra honors him with “A Big Band Tribute to Cole Porter” this Friday, May 7 at the Athenaeum.
