The Indiana Ballet Company contributes additional interesting layers to Indianapolis culture with their Indianapolis performing arts events. Saturday, May 15 the Indiana Ballet Company finishes their season with a one performance of a new ballet: Evolution, a journey through one dancer’s dreams. This Indianapolis theatre event will take the stage at the Madame Walker Theatre in the Indianapolis cultural district, Indiana Avenue, at 7:30 pm this Saturday. Don’t miss your only chance to celebrate the end of a wonderful season from the Indiana Ballet Company.
Evolution is the step by step telling of the story belonging to a sole dancer. Though the journey belongs to one artist, it is a shared tale of following dreams that any artist, or human, can reflect into. From the birth of a dream through the creation of an artist, the Indiana Ballet Company travels through the triumphs and heartaches of one performer. The original ballet the examines physical, emotional and spiritual growth of this dancer, as she discovers how to create dance and how dance creates her.
Evolution is the brainchild of Artistic Director and choreographer Alyona Yakovleva and was created in collaboration with the members of the Indiana Ballet Company. For this one night only performance, the Indiana Ballet Company teams up with students from the Indianapolis dance school, the Russian Ballet Academy of Indiana. The piece hopes to help these students “evolve” along their own artistic paths, while completing the circuit that keeps creativity flowing.
Alyona Yakovleva, as the Indiana Ballet Company’s Artistic Director, builds on a 400 year old heritage of dance, hoping to return to an earlier moment in United States dance history. Under her leadership, the Indiana Ballet Company presents works that are innovative experiments in delivering a truly American form of dance, and perfecting it for the twentieth century. As the leader of this renaissance of one-act, short story ballet, Yakovleva hopes to breath life and humanity back into the art by’ “deepening our connection with it and satisfying our universal, timeless desire for meaning and a good story.”
Her original pieces utilize drama, grace and exquisite sensitivity to capture both the hearts and imaginations of her audiences. As she does this, she also delivers classically based ballet that is accessible, exciting and entertaining for all. As an explorer in a new frontier, she hopes to chart a new course for Indiana and for ballet.
With a deep connection to the Indianapolis community, the Indiana Ballet Company hopes to do little else than to serve and connect to that community while preserving an opportunity for Indianapolis kids that will, hopefully, last for generations. Each artist involved with the Indiana Ballet Company has made a definite commitment to live and work in Indiana year round, dedicating themselves to the success of the Indiana Ballet Company.
