So far, the month of May in Indy has been rainy, chilly, and a little dreary. But it’s nothing IndyCar fans aren’t used to, and citizens of the Circle City have still been out in full force this month to support the plethora of Indianapolis 500 Mile Race (Indy 500) events.
This weekend, prepare for more 500 Festival fun, rain or shine. After Breakfast at the Brickyard on Saturday, where the 500 Festival Queen will be crowned and the pole position will be decided, Sunday brings one of the favorites Indianapolis events all year: the Chase 500 Festival Kids’ Day.
It’s a day all about the Indianapolis kids, and this year’s celebration promises to be bigger and better than ever. Head downtown early and stake out your position on Monument Circle for the Hoosier state’s largest outdoor free festival for children. Each year has its own theme, and for 2010, get ready to “Get Up and Move” it!
In addition to the many activities going on all day on the circle, there will be performances from the Rope Warrier and Radio Disney’s “Move it!” program in support of the theme of Kids Day. This year, it’s all about combining fun and fitness for a healthy, well-rounded weekend. Your kids will have the chance to participate in their very own car racing (of the mini-car variety). In addition, they can take part in the Rookie Run, the little brother of the famed 500 Festival Mini-Marathon.
The Rookie Run is a great way for your children to get in some physical activity and celebrate the greatest spectacle in racing all at the same time. The course length varies by age of participants, and it’s a noncompetitive event, so everyone walks away a winner. For more information on registration and the course, visit the 500 Festival Website.
After the run, help your kids celebrate their victories with face painting, tasty treats, and arts and crafts. Don’t forget to stop by and meet the 500 Festival Princesses, who will be on hand to help your kids create their very own Princess sashes to take home. Your favorite local mascots and cheery clowns will be in the crowd as well. And don’t forget about everyone’s favorite part of the Chase 500 Festival Kids’ Day–the prizes! More than 10,000 prizes from local exhibitors will be handed out, so your child doesn’t need to worry about going home empty-handed.
