The month of May means many things to Indianapolis people. As many of the largest Indiana colleges and universities matriculate another generation of leaders, and Indianapolis schools begin to come to a close, Summer fun starts to heat up at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Though the Indianapolis 500 is the undisputed main event of May in the Circle City, many Indianapolis business and organizations get in on the fun. The Indianapolis 500 Festival Mini-Marathon and the Chase 500 Festival Kids’ Day are two great examples of 500 fun in Indy that happens away from the track. Wednesday, May 26, 2010 the Indianapolis Zoo joins in the 500 fun with their 39th Annual Zoopolis 500, presented by the American Dairy Association. The flag drops at 11:30 am at the Indianapolis Zoo for the running of the 39th Annual Zoopolis 500.
Indianapolis kids and their families look forward to this annual Indianapolis event at the Zoo each year. This tortoise race may not have the speed of the Indianapolis 500, but these competitors have all the heart. Enjoy the pageantry of this slow key race starting at 10:00 am on May 26th, 2010. Have your picture taken with the 500 Festival Pace Car and a 500 Festival Princess at the front gate of the Indianapolis Zoo. Read a host of fun tortoise facts as your make your way to the Dean’s Arena, where the American Dairy Association will be passing out goodies and milk chugs for the kids. As your find your seat, hob knob with Zoo mascots and Buttercup from the American Dairy Association.
But be sure to grab your seat by 11:00 am, when the fun starts at Dean’s Arena. Mike King, the Chief Announcer of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Radio Network, returns for another year of commentary, and with the all important job of making the call for the tortoises in this year’s Zoopolis 500. Zookeeper JP joins Mike on the mic with information about all the racers. As Grand Marshall of the event, Tony Kanaan, Andretti Autosport driver, rounds out the trio of voices at the Zoopolis 500. By 11:30 am, the tortoise racers and a parade of princesses will circle the track, as an excited audience cheers them on. And when Tony Kanaan drops the green flag, the race is on.
The lucky winner will be greeted by a tray of fresh fruit and veggies, a feast for any tortoise, as the winning “Pit Crew” of Zoo Keepers take the traditional drink of milk on the winners behalf in the Zoo’s Winner’s Circle. The Zoopolis 500 has grown to be a true Indianapolis tradition, watched and loved by local race fans and with international media coverage. After the race, take a stroll around the Indianapolis Zoo and catch the new Butterflies exhibit.
