Born in Alexandria, Indiana, Bill Gaither is a proud son of the Hoosier heartland. He formed his first singing group, the Bill Gaither Trio, in 1956 while he was enrolled as a student at Anderson University. The group consisted of Bill, his brother Danny Gaither and his sister Mary Ann Gaither. For less than a decade, Gaither tried to balance his job as an English teacher with his music career, before committing himself full time to the Christian music industry in 1967. His breakthrough song, “He Touched Me,” touched the hearts and souls of thousands of Americans, sky rocketing him to the top of the Christian music charts.
Prior to committing himself wholeheartedly to music, he met and married the love of his life, Gloria Sickal. Many attribute their partnership writing music together as the reason for his rise to success in the music world. In 1964, Gloria replaced Mary Ann in the Bill Gaither Trio. Their repertoire consisted of traditional gospel songs and contemporary compositions written by the Gaithers themselves.
Together Bill and Gloria have been the musical genius behind more than 700 popular Christian music and gospel songs. Their most popular tunes include “Because He Lives,” “The King is Coming,” “Something Beautiful,” “He Touched Me,” “It Is Finished,” “There’s Something About That Name,” “Let’s Just Praise the Lord” and “Loving God, Loving Each Other.” Together Bill and Gloria Gaither have won eight Grammy Awards with more than a dozen nominations. In addition, they have received more than two dozen Dove Awards from the Gospel Music Association, earning the title of Gospel Music Association’s “Songwriter of the Year” an astounding eight times.
This Spring and Summer, the legendary performers return to the road to kick of the Bill Gaither Homecoming Tour 2010. Gaither is not only a noted performer and composer but a wonderful mentor for many others in the music industry. Despite the music industry’s current state of flux, Gaither has managed to remain on top with a beloved series of Homecoming CDs and DVDs. “In times like these,” says Gaither, “we must reflect on what is important in our lives. . . faith, family and friends. I invite everyone to join me an my Homecoming Friends for an uplifting musical extravaganza filled with joy, laughter, good music and good memories.”
