The Indianapolis Motor Speedway officially opened for racing last weekend. Opening day at the track has long been considered the first day of Summer for many Indianapolis 500 race fans. Each year, before droves of fans pour into the Circle City to cheer on their favorite teams and drivers, Hoosiers have a chance to preview the action at a number of events throughout the month of May. This weekend the Indianapolis Motor Speedway invites fans to Fast Friday, Pole Day and Bump Day as racers gear up for competition in qualifying races. These Indianapolis events range from $5.00 to $10.00 with Indianapolis kids under five admitted for FREE. Don’t miss an affordable chance to get an early taste of action at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway this weekend.
Friday, May 21, 2010, the gates of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway open to Indianapolis people at 8:00 am for Fast Friday. Drivers have been practicing on the track all week, and Friday is their last chance to get a few free laps in before the all important qualifying events of Saturday and Sunday. Watch as the possible future winner of the Indy 500 leaves some tread marks on the track. The final practice before Pole Day is an important event for drivers who intend to make a strong showing throughout the Indianapolis 500.
At 11:00, sit down with Tom Carnegie, the voice of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for more than 60 years, for a question and answer session about his tremendous experience. Then at 11:30 am, expert Curt Cavin will field questions. Rookies take the track starting at Noon, while veterans start driving at 2:00 pm. Also, the all important draw for qualifying order will be held at 6:00 pm that day.
But it’s not all sports at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway this Friday as favorite Indianapolis bands rock the house. The Elms and the Jon E. Gee Band will take the stage starting at 1:00 pm. Hailing from Seymour, Indiana, the Elms recently released a new album The Great American Midrange, which features their hit song “Back in Indiana.” Last year, “Back in Indiana” was featured during a national television broadcast of the Indy 500.
Their performance follows the Indiana native John E. Gee Band. John E. Gee has toured the United States playing bass for John Mellencamp since 1999. Before that, he played bass in Ted Nugent’s band. Don’t miss this Indianapolis music concert for only $5.00 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, which include total access to practice events.
Saturday, May 22, 2010 is Pole Day at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. This day decides the all important first twenty four spots on the starting grid and, of course, the pole sitter with the prestigious number one starting position. The fastest cars will move to the front of the pack, deciding who the top racers will be in this years Indianapolis 500. Almost as important as race day itself, Pole Day determines the drivers whose names and faces will be splashed all over the media in the two weeks leading up to the Indianapolis 500.
Gates open at 7:00 am to the public. Drivers will be able to squeeze in a little more practice from 8:00 am to 10:00 am before the qualifying races begin at 11:00 am. At 10:30 am, expert Curt Cavin returns for more questions. Live Indianapolis music on the Coca Cola stage begins at 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm.
Indiana band the Healing Sixes open for Eddie Money. This famous pop star raided the charts with hits like “Baby Hold On,” “Two Tickets to Paradise,” “Think I’m in Love,” “Take Me Home Tonight” and “I Wanna Go Back.” Tickets to Pole Day at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway are $10.00.
Sunday, May 23, 2010 is Bump Day at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Bump Day is the final chance for racers to qualify. Spots twenty five through thirty three are on the line, with more drivers than positions to fill. To race at all in the 2010 Indianapolis Motor Speedway, slower drivers must lay it all on the line and leave it all on the track. See who edges into the race by the skin of their teeth.
Gates open at 8:00 am. Curt Cavin fields questions at 8:30 am. At 9:00 am live music from Rapid Fire beings on the Coca Cola stage. 10:15 am marks the beginning of the Armed Forces Enlistment Ceremony. Qualification races begin at Noon. At 1:00 pm head to a question and answer session with former driver Johnny Rutherford. And at 3:00 pm more live music fills the stage with a performance from No More Goodbyes. Tickets to Bump Day at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway are $10.00.
