Classic, historic Indianapolis hotels like the Canterbury Hotel in downtown Indianapolis often boast first-class restaurants. Such is the case with “The Restaurant at the Canterbury Hotel,” sometimes referred to more simply as Turner’s Restaurant, a proud landmark among the many great Indianapolis restaurants in the center of the Circle City.
This elegant dining room has been the site of many high-powered Indianapolis business meetings over the years. If walls could talk, the walls at the Danielli Restaurant in the heart of Indiana‘s capital city, Indianapolis, could no doubt fill in several chapters of the history of Indianapolis.
The walls are lined, floor to ceiling, with a rich, warm and sculpted wood. A gallery of well-lit, framed pieces of art covers the reddish walls, and brass sconces match the elegant chandeliers. Plush charcoal-blue chairs and tables dot the richly carpeted floor, with crisp white linen and gleaming crystal atop each table. Along some walls of Turner’s, the restaurant at the Canterbury Hotel, are tufted, sumptuously upholstered banquettes.
The effect is of an old-school, old-world dining room, one where you’ll surely enjoy a relaxed meal in a luxuriously subdued atmosphere of fine European fine-dining tradition. The classic menu is, however, comprised mostly of favorite American cuisine.
The breakfast menu at Turner’s offers everything from your basic Eggs Benedict to French Toast with Berries to “The Canterbury Fitness Sundae,” a healthful and tasty concoction of granola, berries and yogurt with an English muffin. There is a plentiful breakfast buffet available from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m., with scrambled eggs, breakfast potatoes, bacon, sausage, fruit, pastries, coffee or juice for only ten dollars, or free to overnight guests at the Canterbury Hotel.
Prices are, in general, surprisingly good for such a grand Indianapolis restaurant. On the lunch menu, you’ll find a mouth-watering Scallop Chowder for only $5, the Canterbury Club sandwich for $8 and Fish & Chips for $9, among other appetizing items.
It isn’t hard to put together a special evening in this nice downtown Indianapolis restaurant. A memorable dinner at the Turner’s might start with a Maryland Blue Crab Cake, move on to the Lobster Bisque and a Baked Goat Cheese Salad with pear and almond slivers, and center around a twelve-ounce New York Strip, Steak Diane or Veal Piccata entree. If you have any room left, you might top it off with Turner’s irresistible Chocolate Ganache Torte for only five dollars, or try their decadent Raspberry Chocolate Souffle.
There’s a special menu for the bar fare at Turner’s, with must-haves such as a Golden Lobster Bisque for a mere $7 a generous bowl. You can even get a succulent Tuna Sashimi, Jumbo Lump Crab Cake or Goat Cheese Burger there. The full bar itself maintains a very nice list of wines by the bottle or the glass.
If this isn’t enough unforgettable culinary potential for you, take someone special to Turner’s Restaurant at the Canterbury Hotel for their Traditional Afternoon Tea, an assorted collection of gourmet treasures worthy of memories for a lifetime.
