Looking for something a little freaky to do in Indianapolis this weekend? Head on down to Mass Ave on Friday, June 4 to get a taste of the crazier side of Indianapolis music at MAWS Music Mania, a showcase of some of Indy‘s best music acts, including a freakified form of the jazz that Indiana Avenue is famously known for. If you can’t wait for the IndyFringe Festival to roll around, this Indianapolis event might just tide you over until the big festival.
Hosted by the Mass Avenue Wine Shop, MAWS Music Mania will take place at the IndyFringe Theater Building, where the bar is fully stocked and the crowd is always tons of fun. This Indianapolis performing arts venue will be hopping on Friday as several unique Indianapolis bands and a couple of special guests take the stage. Hors d’oeuvres will be served to guests, and the event takes place just after the Indianapolis Downtown Artists and Dealers Association (IDADA) First Friday tour, so it’s a perfect way to segue into Indianapolis nightlife.
First up at MAWS Music Mania is Erick Storckman, a Hoosier trombonist who now lives and plays in New York City. Playing with Storckman will be a trio of legendary Indianapolis jazz musicians: co-owner of the Jazz Kitchen and accomplished pianist Steve Allee, seven string bassist Frank Smith, and drummer Kenny Phelps. This is one jazz quartet that would be at home at any Indianapolis music venue, especially the Slippery Noodle Inn or the Chatterbox Jazz Club, but you can only see it for this one-off event at MAWS Music Mania.

Next up is Indianapolis singer/songwriter Steve Hall, who’s much more than your average guitar slinging musician. Steve Hall doubles as a comedian and entertainer, and he made his debut at the IndyFringe open stage in 2009. Since his debut at the Indianapolis festival, Steve Hall has been splitting sides in the Circle City to ever-growing audiences. At MAWS Music Mania, he’ll be joined by his band, Zombie Love, for a night of hilarious anecdotes, crowd singalongs, and inane stage antics.
As the night gets older, the music at MAWS Music Mania will get more serious. At 10:00, Dean Phelps will lend his smooth voice and old time Americana style to the IndyFringe stage, bringing things down to a slow simmer before the final band of the night takes over. At 10:30, The 1933’s will close down the festivities. Billed as a blend of Counting Crowes and Johnny Cash, The 1933’s will get the house stompin’, hootin’, and hollerin’. Powerful guitars combine with harmonica, keyboards, and accordion to create a unique, barn burning style of Indianapolis music.
