Summertime heats up in Indianapolis with a visit from the national tour of the Broadway smash hit musical Jersey Boys. The Old National Theatre (formerly the Murat) welcomes Jersey Boys to Indianapolis theatre June 9 to July 3 in Indianapolis downtown. This documentary style musical delves into the life and times of the Four Seasons, a 1960s rock and roll group that took the United States by storm. Tickets to this Indianapolis art event $24.50 and $72.00 depending on show date and time. Don’t miss Jersey Boys all month at the Old National Theatre in the Indianapolis cultural district, Mass Ave.
Jersey Boys hit Broadway in 2005, winning four of the eight Tony Awards it was nominated for in 2006 including Best Musical, Best Actor, Best Featured Actor and Best Lighting Design. It originally premiered at the La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego, California in October of 2004. The success of the show was so apparent that it soon moved to the August Wilson Theatre on Broadway, wowing audiences in New York as much as it had in California. Not only has Jersey Boys gone onto to cross the United States on a national tour, it has been given productions in London, Toronto, Chicago, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Melbourne and Washington DC.
It shares the story of the legendary rock band The Four Seasons in four parts. The groups rise to fame is chronicled through the eyes of each band member, who each take a turn as the narrative voice throughout the show. Each member of the band, Tommy De Vito, Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio and Nick Massi, offer varied perspectives on the band’s history. Based on interviews with Valli, Gaudio and De Vito, the show’s author Rick Elice illuminates their tumultuous career through a riveting mix of dialogue and music.
The brilliance of Jersey Boys stems from the same ideas that created Mamma Mia, Tommy and the recently opened American Idiot: create a story that both illuminates and is illuminated by already recognizable music. Jersey Boys is packed to the hilt with the hits of The Four Seasons including “You’re the Apple of My Eye,” “Earth Angel,” “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Dry,” “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You,” “Who Loves You,” “December 1963 (Oh, What A Night)” and many more.
