One of the slinkiest, sexiest, smokiest bands to come out of the Circle City in a long time, Beta Male is poised to strike at the heart of Indianapolis music. What started as a loose collaboration of Indianapolis musicians playing live at random venues around the city has become a solid force in Indianapolis art, playing packed houses and putting on innovative, incredibly entertaining shows for hundreds of avid fans. It’s Beta Male, and from the looks of it, this provocative Indianapolis quartet is here to stay.

Beta Male began life as a solo project by drummer/founder P. David Hazel. Initially, he wrote his songs alone (generally starting with the drums), booked shows at Indianapolis music venues, and then hired a cast of talented Indianapolis musicians to play the songs live. Former collaborators with Beta Male have included a relative who’s who of Indy performers, including Vess Ruhtenburg of the Zero Boys and The Lemonheads, Dagan Thogerson of Murder by Death, and a host of musicians from former Indianapolis band Extra Blue Kind. Eventually, the disparate parts of Beta Male solidified to create the 2010 lineup of P. David Hazel, Allison Hazel, Jess Hack, and T. J. Briggs.

The band has a sound that’s at once cohesive and incredibly hard to pin down. Beta Male combines a lot of different influences, including psychedelia, New Wave, dance pop, disco, and more. “Are You Holden?” is a smoky number sung by Allison Hazel, replete with a sexy, sinister bass line and barely breathed vocals; “Where Were You?” smacks of The Cure and Joy Division, a danceable, driving beat swathed in melancholy chords and passionate vocals; and the song that could arguably be considered Beta Male’s hit single, “Husband’s Girlfriend,” features that typical Beta Male bass line with a strong crescendo at the chorus, a catchy combo of bouncing synths, a sticky vocal hook, and danceable beats. “Husband’s Girlfriend” also features a controversial music video that put Beta Male on the map with Indianapolis media outlets like NUVO Newsweekly, Metromix, and IndianapolisMusic.com.

One of the defining features of Beta Male is their iconic live performance. Each show with Beta Male is an Indianapolis event to remember; the band was voted “Sexiest Band in Indianapolis” by Metromix readers for a reason. Beta Male oozes sexuality, from the baby-makin’ rhythm and bass of their sound to the scantily clad performance on stage. Leading lady Allison Hazel has quite a lot of guts to go prancing around in front of hundreds of people in an outfit that consists solely of leather straps, but she makes that costume look like it’s as natural as breathing. Stage antics are commonplace at a Beta Male show, including their infamous nude hula hoopers. A Beta Male show is certainly no place for Indianapolis children, but music fans from downtown Indianapolis and beyond will get a kick out of these sensuous dance parties.

Despite their potential inappropriateness, Beta Male is a fixture at lots of different Indianapolis festivals and Indianapolis bars. In 2009, they performed at the Broad Ripple Music Fest, a comprehensive Indianapolis event that brought tons of great Indianapolis bands to the streets of Broad Ripple Village, an Indianapolis cultural district. They’ve also played at the IndyPride Festival, Birdy’s Bar and Grill, Rock Lobster (for a MGMT/Tame Impala afterparty with electronica/dance quartet Holy F***), the Melody Inn, and WFYI 90.1 FM.
It’s likely that if you go around town on a weekend looking to have a good time, Beta Male will be there to spice up your Indianapolis nightlife experience; it looks like this sensually invigorating group will be around the Circle City for a long, long time.
