Run by the German-American Klub in Indianapolis, the Edelweiss Restaurant is located on the club’s premises directly south of Indianapolis proper, close to Greenwood, in Central Indiana. For many who long for the special succulence of real German cuisine, the Edelweiss German Restaurant in Indianapolis‘ Southside is a taste of home away from home, even for those without real German genes.
The comfy surroundings add to the convivial club-like atmosphere in the Edelweiss Restaurant, and the staff is dedicated and friendly. On Wednesdays, they mount a buffet full of mouth-watering German fare at a price that’s comfortable for your pocket, too.
Naturally, imported German beer is one of the stars of the menu, but if you love German food, you’re going to have a hard time deciding what you really want to eat. The German Sampler Platter is a great bet, and it’s only $9.75, or $8.50 if you’re a member of the German-American Klub. It’s presented with all kinds of different wursts, served over red cabbage and sauerkraut.
The Edelweiss has an American menu too. You might want to order the American Sampler, along with the German Sampler Platter, just to balance things off. It has chicken tenders, breaded mushrooms, onion rings and steak fries with different dipping sauces, and is only $9.25, or $7.95 for members.
Bavarian Soft Pretzels, warm from the oven with cheese sauce and a spicy mustard, are, of course a must. The rest of the menu has similar temptations, such as the rich Haus Soup, made with wursts and cabbage in a savory beef stock, and the Sauerbraten, a house favorite.
There’s a great collection of schnitzels and sides such as potato pancakes, spatzel and German potato salad. Bavarian platters, for the hearty eaters, offer different combinations of sausages, wursts, schnitzel and weiners with traditional German side dishes. The American menu contains items such as the Bistro Filet, Red Snapper and yes, hamburgers.
For dessert, if you’re still game, try the house specialty, warm bread pudding with whiskey sauce.
The Edelweiss German Restaurant is open to the public. However the non-obligatory membership, at $50 per family, $25 for seniors and $5 for students, grants you access to special club events and substantial discounts on food orders.
