Rhodius Park: FREE Movie, Avatar
Last winter one film took the United States by storm. Everyone was talking about James Cameron’s masterwork, Avatar, with its socially responsible message and stunning visual effects. The film was nominated for nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. It took home three Oscars including statues for Art Direction, Cinematography and Visual Effects.
Set on the fictional planet of Pandora in the year 2154, Avatar tells the story of conflict between the RDA corporation who has sent forces to extract a valuable mineral and the indigenous people called the Na’vi. With special genetic technology, the RDA colony has created a means to inhabit a Na’vi body (called an avatar), allowing certain members to build direct relationships with the Na’vi people. When Jake Sully, a former Marine takes on his twin brothers avatar, he meets and falls in love with a member of the Na’vi civilization.
As he learns the ways of the Na’vi, he begins to understand them as more than just he protectors of a valuable resource, but as a special culture with ancient rituals and honor. His relationship with his Na’vi girlfriend, Neytiri, faces many obstacles as he begins to combat the efforts of the evil RDA Company. An obvious commentary on the common exploitation of native cultures and natural resources, Cameron’s flick filled billions of people with the courage to identify and change their perspective on the world. With new graphic technology he created an entire world of stunning animals, plants and more.
Bring a picnic for the whole family, or snuggle on a blanket with that special someone as you enjoy a FREE outdoor film at Rhodius Park. The fun starts at sunset, but get there early for a good spot!
