The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and Conner Prairie Interactive History Park team up each summer to present the Marsh Symphony on the Prairie concert series. These outdoor concerts each weekend are a great way for Indianapolis people to enjoy the fresh Summer air and Indianapolis music in one great location. June 25 and 26, 2010, Marsh Symphony on the Prairie presents Marvin Hamlisch at the Movies, featuring the famed film composer and his classic movie magic music. Tickets to this Indianapolis event are $21.00 for adults and $10.00 for Indianapolis kids with tables available for purchase at $49.00 per table (which also requires that each table member have an individual admission ticket). This Indianapolis arts event starts at 8:00 pm each night.
Marvin Hamlisch is an award winning composer, who one of the only people on history to ever win Oscars, Grammy, Emmys, Golden Globs and a Tony Award. His accomplishments hit all the major parts of United States music history for the past four decades. A genius from a young age, one of Hamlisch’s original compositions was included in Liza Minelli’s debut album when he was only sixteen. By twenty one, Hamlisch’s music was already topping the charts. In 1973, the composer walked away from the Academy Awards with three Oscars for his work on music in the motion pictures The Way We Were and The Sting.
The very next year, Hamlisch earned four Grammy Awards for Song of the Year (The Way We Were), Best New Artist of the Year, Best Pop Instrumental Performance (for The Entertainer) and Best Original Score Written for a Motion Picture (The Way We Were). In that very same decade, Hamlisch won a Pulitzer Prize in Drama for his work on the Broadway musical A Chorus Line. In addition to all of that, he took home the Golden Globe for Best Original Song twice, in 1972 and in 1974.
A close friend and collaborator with the inimitable Barbra Streisand, Marvin Hamlisch earned his first Emmy Award for his work on the 1995 Barbra Streisand: The Concert. In 1999, Hamlisch found himself accepting yet another Emmy for Outstanding Music and Lyrics for AFI’s 100 Years. . .100 Movies. And again in 2001, he took home a third Emmy for Timeless: Live in Concert.
Hamlisch now tours the United States sharing his talents with some of the most ambitious symphony orchestra’s in the nation. He has been the Principal Pops Conductor for seven major symphonies including the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra, the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, the San Diego Symphony Orchestra, the Seattle Symphony Orchestra and the Colorado Symphony Orchestra.
